Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a tour?
Our Arlington National Cemetery tour is designed to last at least 3 hours (and may extend longer), ensuring an unhurried, immersive experience. For those who cannot budget this time, we recommend exploring other Washington, D.C. tour options. Our route covers approximately 3 miles on paved pathways, with an elevation change of 100 feet; some participants may find it challenging, so please come prepared.
What Sets Our Tour Apart?
Our tours offer a truly personalized experience. With a maximum of 12 guests per tour, we ensure a more intimate setting, tailoring the journey to suit your interests. Guided by a retired military member who previously served at Arlington National Cemetery, we provide an insider’s perspective, bringing the living history of Arlington to life with respect and accuracy. Unlike other tours, we never rush, allowing ample time to reflect and connect with the significance of this sacred ground.
Is it possible to tour Arlington National Cemetery while funerals are taking place, and how should we conduct ourselves if we encounter a procession
Yes, it is possible. Arlington National Cemetery is an active cemetery with up to 30 funerals every weekday. Out of respect for the deceased, their family, and their loved ones, we will not interfere with any funeral procession or service. If we come across a funeral procession we will maintain proper distance, remain still and silent, and render proper respect (right hand over heart) as the horse-drawn caisson passes.
Weather Policy and Preparation
Our Arlington National Cemetery tours proceed as scheduled, regardless of weather (except during lightning within 5 miles or official cemetery closures). As our tours are primarily outdoors, please prepare for hot, humid summers and cold, possibly icy winters. Always check the forecast and dress accordingly. Umbrellas are allowed.
Are restrooms available?
Yes, restrooms are located at various points throughout Arlington National Cemetery.
Is water available?
Yes, water fountains are available during spring and summer (turned off from October 1 to March 31). We recommend bringing a water bottle, especially for children who may also need a snack.
Are there places to rest?
While there are a few benches near Arlington House at the hilltop, expect to be standing or walking for the duration of the 3-hour tour.
What if I’m running late?
Please allow ample time to navigate parking, metro access, and security, as the tour begins promptly. We cannot delay the start time, but you may join us at the Military Women’s Memorial within the first 15 minutes. Eric will cover missed information as time permits throughout the tour.
